Heider Manufacturing developed a series of tractors in Carroll, Iowa, featuring their friction-drive system, a type of mechanical continuously variable transmission. The company commenced production in 1911, and by 1912, their tractors were distributed through the Rock Island Plow Company. Rock Island acquired Heider in 1914, but the tractors continued to be marketed under the Heider - Rock Island name for several years thereafter.
