The Leyland 285 is a row-crop tractor produced from 1972 to 1980 by Leyland in Bathgate, Scotland. It features a Leyland 5.6L 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 85 hp (63.4 kW) with a PTO power of 75 hp (55.9 kW). The tractor offers two transmission options: a 10-speed gear transmission and a 9-speed synchromesh transmission introduced in 1979. It is a two-wheel drive tractor with planetary final drives, mechanical rear differential lock, power steering, and hydraulic wet disc brakes. The cab is standard with insulation and heat available after 1976, with an open station option. Hydraulics are open center type with 2600 psi pressure and 11 gpm pump flow. The tractor hitch is category II with position and draft control and a rear lift capacity of 6000 lbs (2721 kg). The rear PTO is independent with 540/1000 rpm options.
