Ward McConnell had a background in farming and later became the owner of his own tractor dealerships. In the mid-1980s, he owned the Marshall Tractor Company and obtained the rights to the large Massey Ferguson four-wheel drive tractors in 1988. He manufactured the Massey 5200 and its variants under his own brand until the business was acquired by AGCO in 1995. In 2000, the McConnell name resurfaced, this time on rebranded Chinese tractors assembled in Prattsburg, New York.
