Toro was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1914, initially manufacturing engines for the Bull Tractor Company. The company expanded into steam engines during World War I and shifted its attention to golf course and lawn maintenance in the 1920s. In 1986, Toro acquired Wheel Horse, a manufacturer of lawn tractors, which included their entire range of lawn and garden tractors and riding mowers. In the 2000s, the company concentrated on producing commercial equipment and ceased the production of residential lawn and garden tractors. In 2007, Toro introduced a re-branded line of tractors that were produced by MTD.
