International Harvester 706

The International Harvester 706 is a standard-tread tractor produced from 1963 to 1967. It was available with a new Torque Amplifier design that prevented free-wheeling when going downhill. An over-center hand clutch was an option, usually found on Wheatland (standard tread) models. The 706 was available with either the Fast Hitch or a standard 3-point hitch. The PTO featured both 540 and 1000 RPM shafts, both of which turned while in use. Total production was 4,884 units, with an original price of $6,100 in 1967. Variants include the Farmall 706 (row-crop), IH 706 (standard-tread), IH 2706 (industrial), and 706 Hi-Clear (high-crop). Engine options included various 6-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines. The tractor featured 8-speed and 16-speed transmissions, including a Torque Amplifier option. Mechanical features include 2WD and optional 4WD, power steering, hydraulic disc brakes, and optional cab with A/C starting in 1966. Fuel capacity ranged from 33 to 39 gallons depending on fuel type, with a 17-gallon hydraulic system. Dimensions varied slightly between 2WD and 4WD models, with front and rear tire sizes specified. Using the TA does not require the clutch or stopping the tractor. With the lever in the forward position, the TA is disengaged and the transmission is in direct drive. To slow the tractor (increasing pulling power) the TA lever should be pulled smoothly and quickly to the rear, engaging the TA. To disengage the TA and return to direct-drive, the TA should be moved forward, with a slight pause at the center position of the lever.
