It was the first John Deere tractor released after the new PTO standards were adopted in 1958 and the first Deere tractor to have its horsepower rated in terms of PTO after Nebraska dropped the belt test in 1959. It features a General Motors 1.7L 2-cylinder supercharged diesel engine, with a 4-speed or 5-speed gear transmission. The tractor has a two-wheel drive with manual steering, with power steering optional after 1960. It has an open operator station and differential mechanical dry disc brakes.
