The New Holland 8240 is a row-crop tractor produced from 1996 to 1997 as part of the PowerStar 40 Series. It was built in Basildon, England and originally priced at $40,500 in 1997. The tractor shares its design with the Ford 8240 and features a Ford Genesis 7.5L 6-cylinder diesel engine. It offers two transmission options: a 12-speed synchronized SynchroShift and a 16-speed four-speed power shift ElectroShift/Pulse Command. The tractor is available in two- or four-wheel drive configurations with hydraulic wet disc brakes and electro-hydraulic differential lock. It has a rear PTO with 540/1000 rpm options and a rear hitch type II with various control options. The 8240 supports front-end loaders including the Ford 7411 and 7413 models. Dimensions vary between 2WD and 4WD models, with weights ranging from 8,684 to 10,882 pounds depending on configuration. Electrical system includes a negative ground alternator charging system with 55 or 100 amps depending on cab type.

Options:12-speed synchronized, 16-speed four-speed power shift
SynchroShift:synchronized, 12 forward and reverse gears, dry disc clutch, Four gears (1-4) in three ranges (L/M/H) with right-hand shuttle lever. Gear shifts are synchronized. Shifts between medium and high ranges are synchronized, but the tractor should be stopped to shift to or from low range. Sychronized shuttle shifting. The 12-speed SynchroShift was standard on the 8240 SL.
ElectroShift/Pulse Command:four-speed power shift, 16 forward and reverse gears, wet disc clutch, Oil capacity 64 qts (60.6 L), Four power shift gears arranged in two synchronized ratio groups (1-4 and 5-8). Two synchronized ranges (low/high) and right-hand shuttle. Clutch must be used to shift range or move between the lower (1-4) and higher (5-8) gear ratio groups. Push-button power shifting between the four gears in a ratio group. Push-button de-clutching on the shuttle lever allow shifting without the foot clutch. The 16 power shift was standard on the 8240 SLE.
