Valmet, originally known as Valtion Metallitehdas (translated as "state metal factory"), was a Finnish manufacturer of arms that expanded into the tractor industry in 1951. The company began exporting tractors in 1958 and established a factory in Brazil by 1960. In 1979, Valmet formed a partnership with Volvo to produce tractors under the Volvo BM Valmet brand. After acquiring Volvo in 1985, Valmet entered into a collaboration with Massey-Ferguson to manufacture tractors at Massey’s facility in France. Valmet remained a government-owned entity until 1993, when it merged with Sisu. As part of this merger, the Valmet name was gradually retired and replaced by Valtra, which had already been associated with implements and forestry equipment.
