Farmall 706

The Farmall 706 is a row-crop tractor produced from 1963 to 1967 by Farmall, a part of International Harvester. It was built in Rock Island, Illinois, USA, with a total production of 45,053 units. The 706 featured a new Torque Amplifier design to prevent free-wheeling downhill and was available with an over-center hand clutch option. It offered either the Fast Hitch or a standard 3-point hitch and had PTO shafts at both 540 and 1000 RPM. Variants included row-crop, standard-tread, industrial, and high-crop models. Engine options included various International Harvester 6-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines. Transmission options were 8-speed or 16-speed with a sliding gear and Torque Amplifier. The tractor had power steering, hydraulic dry double disc brakes, and optional cab with A/C starting in 1966. Fuel capacity ranged from 33 to 39 gallons depending on fuel type, and the hydraulic system held 17 gallons. The 706 had independent rear PTO with 540/1000 RPM options. Dimensions varied between 2WD and 4WD models, with weights ranging from 7,530 to 10,710 lbs depending on configuration. Attachments included the International Harvester 2000 Loader with a lift capacity of 2,330 lbs and breakout force of 4,010 lbs.

Transmission

Type:sliding gear, Torque Amplifier
Gears:8 forward and 4 reverse (standard), 16 forward and 8 reverse (Torque Amplifier)
Notes:The 706 transmission is controlled by means of two levers. A range lever selects high, low, reverse range, or neutral. A separate speed lever selects one of four speeds. The tractor must be stopped, and the clutch used, to change range or speed gears. The Torque Amplifier (TA) provides a hydraulically-actuted under-drive that may be shifted, on the move, with any range and speed selection in the main transmission. Using the TA does not require the clutch or stopping the tractor. With the lever in the forward position, the TA is disengaged and the transmission is in direct drive. To slow the tractor (increasing pulling power) the TA lever should be pulled smoothly and quickly to the rear, engaging the TA. To disengage the TA and return to direct-drive, the TA should be moved forward, with a slight pause at the center position of the lever.
