Toro was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1914, initially manufacturing engines for the Bull Tractor Company. During World War I, the company expanded into steam engines and shifted its focus to golf course and lawn maintenance in the 1920s. In 1986, Toro acquired the lawn tractor manufacturer Wheel Horse, gaining access to their complete range of lawn and garden tractors, as well as riding lawn mowers. In the 2000s, Toro concentrated on producing commercial equipment, phasing out residential lawn and garden tractors. In 2007, they introduced a re-branded line of tractors produced by MTD.
